SURF FESTIVAL BEACH BAR RAISES FUNDS FOR LOCAL CHARITIES
Noosa Festival of Surfing beneficiary Frangipani Dreams plans to use funds raised to support the Katie Rose Hospice for the terminally ill at Doonan. Frangipani founder Moy Sweetman said that proceeds from the bar and the raffle of two Hawaiian Airlines’ tickets to Hawaii would be used to support the hospice and other local charities.
The Hawaiian-style Beach Bar will be the centrepiece of the PJ Burns Festival Village at First Point, with stunning views of the surfing and the entertainment stage from the upper deck. Free live music, surf movies, Zumba dancing, fashion parades and other entertainments will kick in each afternoon as soon as the surfing has finished, with food stalls offering wood-fired pizza and barbeque specials.
Festival director Phil Jarratt said that he and Cr Russell Green had inspected the beach site this week after consistent swells and rain run-off had eroded the sand level. “We were getting a little worried that there wouldn’t be enough sand above the high tide line to fit scaffolds for the beach bar and judging tower, but Cr Green and the Sunshine Coast Council have offered full support to top up sand levels as required so that we can show our best face to all our international visitors.”
The Festival, which opens on Sunday, 11 March and runs through to Saturday, 17 March, will feature acoustic guitar legends Peter Howe and Tim Gaze, and Mayor Bob Abbot’s Green Machine blues band on opening night, with performances from Band of Frequencies, Transvaal Diamond Syndicate, Guthrie and Asa Broomhall Band during the week. Movies to be screened include Sons of Beaches 72 and the world premiere of Californian film-maker Steve Cleveland’s Paradigm Shift.
Jarratt said the focus at this year’s festival would be on engaging the local community as well as the 5000 plus visitors. “We’ve got great stuff happening on the beach in and out of the water all week, so even if you don’t know much about surfing, this is the perfect opportunity to come down with the family and learn a bit about our sport while enjoying free entertainment and supporting some worthwhile charities.”
The PJ Burns Festival Village and Beach Expo will be open from midday each day of the festival and the Beach Bar will operate from 4pm to 8pm most nights. Profits from the Beach Bar will be divided between Frangipani Dreams and the Noosa Malibu Club’s youth development program. The full program for the festival will be published as a wraparound in the Noosa Journal on Friday, 9 March.
